7.30am - Kampong Kleng half day  - Fishing community of the Tonle sap lake From the main port in Siem Reap, it takes about 3 hours to reach this town, but we travel by road to reduce the time and distance by boat and then it just takes about 30 minutes to reach Kampong Kleng by boat once you have reached the edge of the flooded lake.   High on adventure and truly the Hidden Cambodia). Board a motorboat to Kampong Kleng, (meaning the village of the stilts), a lively commercial fishing village located south of Siem Reap and on the edge of the Tonle Sap lake.

All houses are stilted and some are up to four and five meters tall. Our guide explains the live hood of the people and their daily activities. Enter the stilted village, now flooded and travel through this large town through to a more separate Vietnamese village on to the edge of the Tonle Sap. Here we stop to look at the houses, the gardens, the small shops, the array of animals and dogs that live on houseboats etc. Further out we visit those actively fishing shrimps and other fish using an assortment of hand held and larger fish traps. Our guide explains these centuries old practices they use today and we view the great expanse of the largest freshwater lake in the world as it head south. Here this family repair nets for living and have their own fish farm. They have a very comfortable house with a toilet and we take a small portion of their decking to lay a mat and have lunch prepared by Hidden Cambodia staff while taking in the view. ack through the many waterways to visit the main central part of Kampong Kleng once again. Visit the interesting house of our boat driver, see a river back street from his balcony, the neighborhood and his wife’s rural kitchen. Back on the boat and out again to visit the local wat, market and school, located on an island in the middle of the town! Some interesting murals honor Buda and it may be possible to get a blessing by local monks, for a small donation to the wat.

Often requested by guests so that they can hear the chanting! Our last stop is a prominent family’s beautiful wood house, a home and commercial location to see their crocodile business and to avail of their pristine tiled toilets!
